Madge Bellamy [1899-1990] Star in Fox Films. A VERSATILE personality is that of Madge Bellamy, who has been titian-haired, blonde and her natural brunette self, the current version, and the one she declared she prefers to all others. Miss Bellamy has wide brown eyes, a fair skin with just a suggestion of freckles, and her hair, as nature planned it, is dark brown shot with gleams of red. In her early days on the screen her hair was long and luxuriant and curled softly about her face. She was cast in demure and girlish roles, her outstanding work in that particular phase being her portrayal of the pioneer maid in "The Iron Horse." Soon after that, at the instigation of a press agent who had discovered that Helen of Troy and other well known charmers of history were red-heads, Miss Bellamy decided that her hair being twenty-five per cent red anyway, she might as well go all the way, and forthwith resorted to the use of henna. Some time later Miss Bellamy was awarded the title role in "Sandy," with the proviso that her hair should undergo still another color change to make it conform with the implication in the title. This part offered too good an opportunity for a display of histrionics to be passed up, so Miss Bellamy gave her personality a thorough overhauling. Almost over night she changed from an old-fashioned girl to a flapper-blonde, bobbed and blasé. Madge became even more popular in her new guise and the picture was a great success. When blondes became over plentiful following Anita Loos' discovery of gentlemanly preferences, Miss Bellamy returned to her normal coloring. Then followed a series of light comedies including "Very Confidential," "Silk Legs," "The Play Girl" and "Soft Living." Probably her best screen work to date is her characterization of the love starved actress-daughter in the Fox Film version of Edna Ferber's celebrated story "Mother Knows Best," now showing throughout the country. In this she impersonates also such outstanding theatrical figures as Al Jolson, Sir Harry Lauder and the late Anna Held. At present Miss Bellamy is appearing in a Richard Harding Davis story "Exiles" with Don Terry playing opposite her. [The page features four photographic pictures of Madge Bellamy. Janet Gaynor [1906-1984] Star in Fox Films. BEAUTIFUL, with velvety brown eyes and reddish brown hair, Janet Gaynor is known to millions of film fans as the girl who plays on the heart strings of the world as does Kreisler on his violin. Within two years from the time she first appeared as a timid little extra girl, Miss Gaynor's ability has swept her to the topmost pinnacle of screen prominence. She is little affected by the enviable position she now occupies. During her leisure hours she is just a normal American girl, fond of dancing and a day on. the sands in front of her modest home on the Pacific coast. She drives her own car and occasionally makes a plane flight. Janet Gaynor was born in Philadelphia, schooled in Florida, Chicago and San Francisco. In 1925 she landed her first job in Hollywood as an extra girl. Extra work was her lot for six months. She got a lead in two-reel Westerns and finally was selected by Winfield Sheehan, production chief of Fox Film Corporation, for a part in "The Johnstown Flood." Her real ability was revealed in this production. She was placed under contract and from that time her rise has been meteoric. Her march to fame really began with her remarkable portrayal of the role of Diane in "7th Heaven." Then followed outstanding performances in the dramatic production "Sunrise," "Street Angel," and the current Murnau production, "Four Devils," in which she plays a trapeze performer in a circus. At present she is completing her role as a Dutch girl in Tristram Tupper's "Christina." Miss Gaynor is twenty-one years old, weighs 98 pounds and faces probably the most brilliant future of any young girl now in pictures. [The page features four photographic pictures of Janet Gaynor. The first photo shows her looking into the photo camera, above, as prima ballerina, down left, in a conversation in a garden, down center, and posing in a boudoir pajama, down right.] HAMILTON GARMENT CO., INC. Mary Duncan [1894-1993] Featured Player in Fox Films. A NEW and exotic personality has flashed on the film horizon in the slender, hazel-eyed brunette beauty, Mary Duncan. Miss Duncan, now in her early twenties, is a charming product of Luttrellville, near Richmond, Va. After dramatic courses at Cornell and tutelage by Yvette Guilbert, Miss Duncan played leads on the stage with Leo Ditrichstein, the late Holbrook Blinn and with Ernest Truex. As "Poppy", the evil daughter, in "The Shanghai Gesture" with Florence Reed, she was showered with popular and critical acclaim. She thus came to the attention of the production chiefs of Fox Film Corporation who arranged for a screen test. Though this was successful, it was eighteen months before the triumphant run of "The Shanghai Gesture" ended in California and Miss Duncan was free to embark on her screen career. Under contract with Fox she was nurtured in screen technique by playing supporting roles in two productions starring Madge Bellamy — "Very Confidential", and "Soft Living." She was then chosen to play the destructive influence in the well ordered lives of the acrobatic troupe known as "Four Devils," which is the title also of F. W. Murnau's colorful production now on view at the Gaiety Theatre in New York. In the portrayal of a worldly, scheming temptress Miss Duncan is said to have attained full stature as a cinema actress. This role was followed by featured parts in two other important Fox Films: with Charles Farrell in Frank Borzage's dramatization of Tristram Tupper's story "The River," and in another Murnau production, "Our Daily Bread," in which again she is cast opposite Charles Farrell. [The page features four photographic pictures of Janet Gaynor.
